The CBIRD program sponsored by the US Army under an SBIR contract  successfully proved the concept of using arrays of diffractive optical elements (lenslet arrays) for simultaneous multi-spectral imaging.

 Based on the results of CBIRD the Athena infrared hyperspectral proof of concept cameras was developed to demonstrate that the lenslet array optics and actuation system could be embedded in the dewar as an integral part of the cold-shield.
