This proof of concept was to show that an array of diffractive optical elements placed in close proximity to the FPA can simultaneously image multiple different spectral versions of the scene. An array of 4 x 4 elements covering both the SWIR to MWIR spectral bands imaged 16 images each frame of the camera as depicted above. This approach to mulitspectral imaging enables rapid real-time processing of the data to find and identity targets
A complete hyperspectral data cube of 100's of bands was collected in less then a second. This approach reduces the effects of temporal variations that are inherent other nonparallel techniques
Using an LN2 pour fill dewar the lenslet array concept as a simultaneous multi-spectral imaging camera was successfully demonstrated and funding was secured to take the technology to the next step and package the lenslet multi-spectral imaging in closed cycle dewar cooler system as performed on the Athena program
